I ran into an error after uploading a PDF - how do I fix this?

It's likely that the PDF is encrypted or has formatting that prevents processing. Here are some quick steps to try:

  1. Try uploading again — intermittent issues can sometimes resolve on a second attempt
  2. Check the file — make sure the PDF is not encrypted, password-protected, or created from a scanned document
  3. Use a .docx instead — if a Word version is available, .docx is always the preferred format
  4. Review the guidelines — see Best Practices: PDF Uploads for the full list of recommendations

When a document fails to upload, the DocJuris team is automatically notified. You can expect to hear from support within 24 business hours. If you need immediate assistance, please reach out to support@docjuris.com or your organization's Customer Success Manager.

When a PDF is uploaded for analysis, DocJuris automatically converts contract documents into an editable format — but certain file characteristics can cause this conversion to fail.

Common Causes

Before reaching out to support, confirm your PDF meets these guidelines:

  • The PDF is not encrypted or password-protected
  • The PDF is not from a scanned document or is a high-fidelity scan
  • The PDF does not contain complex images, large tables, or watermarks
  • The PDF does not contain drawings, Gantt charts, or non-text information — although DocJuris has built-in OCR capabilities, complex graphics may cause issues
  • The PDF does not contain embedded markups or strikethroughs — these will not be recognized as markups in DocJuris

Workarounds

Drawings or Complex Graphics

Use a PDF tool to extract the legal terms from complex, multi-page documents that contain images or non-text information.

Low-Fidelity Scans

Use a PDF tool to enhance the scan quality, or locate a higher-fidelity version of the PDF. If scanning from a hard copy, use the highest DPI setting available.

PDFs with Embedded Markups

Use a PDF editor to edit the text of the terms in the PDF before loading it into DocJuris. If a comparison is needed, create two copies and run a comparison: one original without edits, and one revised with edits.

Please note that although track change restrictions and read-only .docx files can be unlocked by DocJuris, .docx files with a password to open will still require you to input the password.

If your PDF meets the guidelines above and is still failing, there are some offline workarounds that we can assist you with. Please reach out to support@docjuris.com or your organization's Customer Success Manager.
